š„ The moment we have all been waiting for: CDR.fyi just released its amazing 2024 review, packed with incredibly useful and easily digestible information on the state of the carbon dioxide removals (hashtag#CDR) market.
So much good stuff in there, but here are my top takeaways:
š The market is growing: sales reached 8Mt of CDR in 2024, up 78% from 4.5Mt in 2023 and more than in all previous years combined (5.2Mt).
š¦ So are deliveries: deliveries grew 120% from 145Kt in 2023 to 319Kt in 2024. And 86% of these are BCR, which also accounts for 84% of all-time deliveries between 2020-2024.
š» Microsoft continues to lead: the American tech giant accounted for 5.1Mt or 63% of all purchases in 2024 - down in relative terms from the 70% share in 2023.
šøšŖš©š° Nordic BECCS dominates sales: 58.5% of all sales went to just two BECCS companies: 41.7% / 3.3Mt to Swedish Stockholm Exergi and 16.7% / 1.3Mt to Danish Ćrsted.
š§š“š§š· Latin American BCR dominates deliveries: 44% of all deliveries went to just two BCR companies: 27% / 86Kt to Bolivian Exomad Green and 17.1% / 55Kt to Brazilian Aperam BioEnergia Ltda..
š Prices are going down: the average price decreased by 35% from $490 in 2023 to $320 in 2024 with huge variations for some technologies like DACCS ($100-$2,000/t).
š Overall, I was positively surprised by this report: 2024 was a tough year for climate tech. I expected more setbacks. Instead, the overall impression for me is clear: the CDR market is growing fast and diversifying. Letās make sure 2025 continues this trend.
š There is so much more to unpack. I highly recommend the full - CDR.fyi subscriber only - 41 page report.
