š Did you see what Minneapolis is planning? This summer, they will be opening a city run biochar facility in collaboration with Xcel Energy to turn municipal waste into revenue and carbon removal.
Expected impact?
ā Process over 3,000 tons of wood waste
ā Produce more than 500 tons of biochar
ā Remove nearly 3,700 tons of COā from the atmosphere, equivalent to taking 789 cars off the road.
ā Set a precedent for other cities, looking to adopt biochar
šAs James Doten, Minneapolis' carbon sequestration program manager, put it: "Biochar is the Swiss Army knife of climate tools, it helps grow food, saves our trees, improves stormwater management, and keeps carbon locked away for centuries."
ā”Couldnāt have said it better myself. BCR is here, it works, and cities are already deploying it across the U.S. and Europe. It is the perfect circular, decentralised solution for cities of the future.
š Cities will play a big role in scaling CDR over the coming decade. The 4 Corners Carbon Initiative in the U.S. led the way, and dozens of cities are lining up next. Watch this space and follow City CDR Initiative, Christiaan Gevers Deynoot and Christopher Neidl who are leading the industry's work on the topic.
š„ This case study is yet another great example of why BCR rocks! And more ammunition for my upcoming head-to-head with Martin Freimüller in the DAC vs. Biochar debate on April 7th.
