🌱🇪🇺BREAKING: Nature Restoration Law passes in the European Parliament 🇪🇺🌱

Today is a significant day as we celebrate the passing of the Nature Restoration Law in the European Parliament, with 336 votes in favour and 300 votes against. This landmark decision marks a significant step forward in the efforts to restore and protect our precious natural environment.

The Nature Restoration Law in the European Union (#EU) hung in the balance ahead of this decisive vote, following a vote in the European Parliament's environment committee on June 27. The Law aims to restore Europe's ecosystems, including forests, agricultural land, and marine habitats, to combat biodiversity loss, carbon emissions, and climate change impacts.

What are the features of the Law?

🎯The law sets ambitious targets for the restoration of #ecosystems. It aims to restore at least 20% of the EU's land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.

💶The law highlights the economic benefits of #nature restoration, stating that every euro invested in land restoration brings an economic return of €8-€38. It also recognises the role of nature restoration in mitigating #climatechange.

📍Member States are required to develop National Restoration Plans, taking into account their specific national circumstances.

What are the implications for Europe’s ecosystems?

🛣The need for restoring Europe's ecosystems was urgent, as 81% of habitats were in poor or bad condition, leading to biodiversity loss, increased carbon #emissions, and heightened vulnerability to climate change impacts.

📢The overall outcome was difficult to gauge as the environment committee was divided on the issue, while other committees were outright against it. Accusations were made against the EPP for preventing certain lawmakers from voting in the environment committee, leading to concerns about the lack of diversity in the vote.

🇪🇺Following the passing of the Nature Restoration Law, the stage is now set for inter-institutional negotiations with EU member states under the Spanish presidency of the Council, hopefully before the next EU parliamentary elections.

What do you think about the Nature Restoration Law? Are there any implications I’ve missed?
