💥Exciting initiative comparing the 10 leading carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) technologies💥

If you are new to CDR or keen to learn more, look no further! Carbonx Climate launched an initiative with the aim of improving data transparency and better overall understanding of the CDR landscape. Their data spans a diversity of CDR pathways and helps to bring some clarity to this burgeoning industry while highlighting what’s still missing.

I tried to visualise and condense it with a simple graphic. Here are my key takeaways:

🌱 The breadth of technologies included is impressive, particularly given the lack of public information on some of these. Kudos for differentiating between all the various biomass carbon removal and sequestration (#BiCRS) methods.

🔎 Carbonx Climate doesn’t hide the fact that some data doesn’t exist yet. But sometimes just noticing its absence is the first step in gathering all the pieces we need to make more informed decisions.

🤝It’s interesting to see that biochar carbon removal (#BCR), direct air capture (#DAC), and enhanced weathering (#EW) together account for nearly three-quarters of all companies in their analysis.

☁️There is still a gross disparity of funding between the various approaches - with #DAC receiving more than 15x what went into #BCR, despite the latter being by far the most prominent technology today.

🏦It’s good to see a range of purchasing prices for the various pathways, which highlights that this is a young industry where prices haven’t stabilised yet and should not be the key factor when making decisions.

I am really pumped about these high quality comparative research efforts surfacing recently. Last week I posted about the AlliedOffsets database (https://lnkd.in/dA96RmAU), and this week CarbonX - these are fantastic databases that will enrich our understanding of where the space is at.

Big shout out to Sebastien Dewarrat, Paolo Piffaretti and the rest of the CarbonX team for their amazing work here. Really excited for what is to come. ❓
