Let´s look at the key stats for high-durability (100+ years) carbon dioxide removal (#cdr):
💵 Purchase of high-quality CDR grew by 530% from 94k tonnes in 2021 to 593k tonnes in 2022
📈 The total market size of high-quality CDR purchases in 2022 was $226,418,403
🚚 Deliveries of high quality CDR grew by 131% from 16k tonnes in 2021 to 37k tonnes in 2022
💡 Biochar dominated the purchases (40%), deliveries (87%) and biggest suppliers (90%) in 2022
⏱ Biochar orders are being fulfilled within ~5 months of orders, while the remainder are >30 months
💰 Biochar had the lowest average cost per ton ($179) while the average price per tonne across technologies was $403 and as high as $1,662.
Key takeaways for me:
1️⃣ The CDR market is growing at impressive rates. Yes, we are still nowhere close to where we need to be (0.0006% to be precise, as the report points out), but we can get there if we can keep this growth going!
2️⃣ Biochar is the clear star of the show, on all fronts (purchase, delivery amounts and times, cost, etc.). We need to make sure that policy reflects its incredible potential fully.
3️⃣ This market needs a big push, both on the supply side and the buyers side. And government policy can and should play the central role by creating more incentives / support for suppliers and standardisation / clarity for buyers.
Big shout out to www.cdr.fyi for this great recap and the authors behind it Robert Höglund and Kevin Niparko - for the full write up check out their medium article in the comment section.
Great to see that Carbonfuture is taking #2 place in the top CDR market places 💪
