In case you needed any more reasons to boycott the #worldcup2022 in #Qatar: it touts itself as the first #carbonneutral World Cup, and falls short of this on so many levels.

It estimated that 3.6Mt of CO2 are going to be emitted (actually more like 6Mt) and founded the Global Carbon Council (GCC) to acquire the required offsets.

1️⃣ #conflictofinterest: some of the project developers and appraiser sit on the steering committee of GCC. And, surprise: these projects get approved despite falling short of the GCC´s own published criteria 😕

2️⃣ #additionality: all the projects chosen to date are renewable energy projects in countries where renewables are booming which would easily have received financing anyway 👎

3️⃣ #greenwashing: while bathing in #carbonneutral glory, FIFA is apparently only responsible for 10% of the emissions, the rest lies with the Qatari government, which is nowhere close to its target 🆘

All to say: efforts like this one, while looking good on the surface, are undermining the amazing work of serious and legitimate companies in the #carbonremoval space. We need better #accountability to build the #trust that will be needed for carbon removals to actually reach the scale required to reach the 1.5 target.

One of the many reasons I decided to join carbonfuture - the BS that I described above could simply not happen had these removals been acquired through a platform like carbonfuture.
