Oil & Gas Executive: “We believe that our direct capture technology is going to be the technology that helps to preserve our industry over time. This gives our industry a license to continue to operate for the 60, 70, 80 years that I think it’s going to be very much needed." (Vicki Hollub, CEO @ Occidental Petroleum).
Whether we like it or not, this is how carbon dioxide removal (#CDR), and direct air capture (#DAC) in particular, are seen by many prominent industrial and political figures. I´ve heard it many times in private, and increasingly in public.
Yes, we have to collaborate with O&G. Yes, they have an important role to play. But, NO, this is not what CDR is or should be used for.
Couldn't have said it better than Erin Burns at Carbon180: "The role of carbon removal in addressing climate change is to remove legacy emissions. It’s not to offset continued fossil fuel use"
Let's call out BS like this when we see and hear it, otherwise we risk undermining an entire industry set up to help clean up the atmosphere and reverse climate change, not contribute to polluting it.
Do you agree? What else can we do to set the record straight?
