š I LOVE this infographic by Carbon Gap - it is the most useful overview of the incredible breadth of CDR approaches I have seen to date.
š” It somehow manages to illustrate 16 different ways we can remove carbon from the atmosphere while overlaying both storage duration and reversal risk.
Acknowledging I am not a scientist and might be wrong here, a few constructive observations:
š hashtag#SoilCarbon should be on the far left, as it represents the most reversible and short-term removal I know.
šŖØ We should be talking of Biochar Carbon Removal (hashtag#BCR) = the CDR process, not Biochar which is barely (one of) the product of BCR.
š¢ hashtag#Biooil is deemed the second most durable and irreversible method. My understanding is that it could (in theory) be pumped back out of the ground (if deemed valuable in future) and that bacteria - if they were to reach it underground - could do great damage. Personally see it on the left of BCR. [UPDATE: check thread with Peter Reinhardt from Charm Industrial in the comments on this š]
š Enhanced weathering (hashtag#EW) should be on the far right. I am not aware of how the carbon could be re-emitted once sequestered and it is as permanent as it gets?
ā What is your take? Do you agree with Carbon Gapās assessment?
ā Just to stress again: it is next to impossible to get this 100% right and to me it is definitely the best, most accurate overview I have seen to date.
š Kudos to Carbon Gap (Rodica, Eli, Christoph, Alexis, Quincy, Matteo, James, Sylvain, Lydia and team) for putting this infographic together which will be invaluable to the ecosystem.
