šŸ’Ŗ Letā€™s walk the talk and make CDR conferences more sustainable šŸ’Ŗ

āœˆļø Over a year ago, I picked a bone with you all about flying around the world to attend climate conferences. The post got lots of people engaged and I was glad to see that there are organisations taking this seriously.

šŸ¤” The thing is, I havenā€™t really stopped thinking about it. And so I decided to do something. Now I need your help to get this across the finish line.

šŸ“‹ To start, I put together a communal spreadsheet which compiles all CDR conferences. So if nothing else ā€“ you now have that all compiled for you in one place (link in comments). I am definitely missing some, so please flag them to me in the comments and I can update it.

šŸ¤“ Then, I've attempted to calculate the carbon footprint for each of these based on the approximate number of attendees and a pretty robust methodology we use at Carbonfuture. I also added if the conference organisers offset its impact with durable CDR. Again, if I missed or got something wrong, just let me know. This is *our* tool.

šŸ“ As the saying goes, ā€œWhat gets measured gets managedā€. The point of the exercise is that by laying it out all out there we can begin to make more deliberate choices.

šŸ“‰ The first and foremost is about REDUCING. In this case, that means reducing physical attendance at conferences. I know Iā€™m not alone in questioning the value (and hypocrisy) of some of these huge climate conferences. Letā€™s focus on quality > quantity.

šŸ¤ I also understand and appreciate the value of in-person networking. Some conferences are simply an unparalleled opportunity to connect with so many people all in one place. We NEED to be offsetting all emissions for these with durable carbon removal - that has to be the industry standard.

šŸ™ Itā€™s not perfect, but itā€™s a starting point. I am asking for people in our community to input into this to make it better, and more accurate. What events am I missing? Do you agree with the assumptions?
