🌍 New groundbreaking survey published in Nature Climate Change spanning 125 countries and over 130,000 people indicates a global willingness to combat climate change 🌍
🙌 Researchers Peter Andre, Teodora Boneva, Felix Chopra & Armin Falk discovered that despite diverse backgrounds, a striking majority of the world's population is not just concerned about climate change but is ready to take personal and collective action.
Key Highlights:
💵 69% of participants are willing to allocate 1% of their income towards climate action efforts
♻️ 86% endorse pro-climate social norms, advocating for behavioural shifts towards sustainability
🏛️ An overwhelming 89% demand their governments to ramp up efforts against climate change, reflecting a universal call for policy enhancements.
⚠️ Countries at higher risk from climate impacts show greater readiness to contribute, signalling an urgent call for support from the global community.
👎 However, individuals are less willing to contribute if they perceive the adaptation costs as too high (when the required lifestyle changes are perceived as too drastic).
📋 Their study revealed a "Perception Gap" where individuals globally underestimate the climate action willingness of others to contribute and warn this misalignment could hamper our collective efforts towards climate mitigation.
👥 The data suggests that enhancing awareness about the true level of community support for climate initiatives could significantly boost global cooperation and action because individuals are more inclined to contribute to the common good when they believe others are doing the same.
💚 By addressing the misconceptions about others' attitudes and actions, we can dismantle the barriers to collective efforts, fostering a more united and effective global response to climate change.
