Rishi Sunak (UK's Prime Minister) says approving more oil and gas licences is "entirely consistent" with reaching net zero by 2050.
Sunak says even when net zero is reached, a quarter of UK energy needs will come from oil and gas.
At least 100 new production licences will be issued in the next round this autumn. This is the same country that hosted COP two years ago.
The UK is - to me at least - a leader for carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) globally (see a spotlight I wrote on it here). Just recently, it paved the way for CDR to be included in its compliance market (#UKETS). But it is also going down a dangerous road focused on ramping up fossil fuel use and using point-source carbon capture and storage (#CCS), and to a certain extent CDR, to pretend that it is on a viable path to net-zero...
Not ok, it's 2023 for Christ's sake! We need to stop exploring and tapping new oil and gas fields - now! Yes to deploying CCS. And - of course - yes to more CDR. But no to using that to cover for continued fossil fuel exploration and use!
