The last two days have been amazing! Seeing so many global experts debate certification of carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) in such depth is rare and instills me with confidence.
There are many things worth highlighting, but I shall limit myself to three:
â  The potential of Biochar Carbon Removal (#BCR) is finally recognised widely. A year ago, it was a distant third behind #DACCS and #BECCS in CRCF discussions within the EU Commission. Yesterday - largely based on the very compelling presentation on permanence by Professor Hamed Sanei - attitudes had clearly shifted. ItÂŽs evident now that BCR has and will play a central role in the CRCF.
đ€Â The experts are still struggling with open-systems CDR and seem to tread carefully. Within this category, enhanced weathering (#EW) is definitely leading the way with regard to scientific evidence, real-world deliveries, and potential. Filling missing gaps quickly will be key to ensure we do not lose out on the massive scale/potential of open-systems CDR.
đŻÂ #Methodologies for permanent CDR are developing at a fast rate. There are now methodologies (sometimes several) for all leading permanent CDR approaches. The space has come a long way in just a few years and it is amazing to see standards and operators pushing ahead to create the conditions and trust the space needs to scale.
Overall, I left this workshop with a lot of confidence and optimism, something I needed after the frustrating #ENVI vote earlier this week. The EU Commission will play a key role in the trilogue negotiations and I trust it will push for a wide and tech-neutral approach đ
Many great analyses have been shared already about the meeting - please find them in the comments. Also, find a link to the recordings.
Shoutout to the team at the EU COM in particular for organising this event and for leaving so much time for discussion Christian Holzleitner Fabien Ramos Andrea Klaric - and props to CarbonfutureŽs Berta who did a terrific job on the biochar session
What is your take from yesterday? Do you share my reflections?
