🇺🇲 US IRA Funding for #Biochar: New Climate-Smart Practices Added for 2024

💰 The U.S. Department of Agriculture (hashtag#USDA)’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (#NRCS) expanded its climate-smart practices list, opening the door to $3 Billion in Inflation Reduction Act (#IRA) funds for carbon amendments and biochar production in FY2024.

Two new practices will be added to the USDA’s NRCS’s Climate-Smart Practices List:

🌱 Carbon Amendments to Improve Soil Health: Carbon Amendments: Aim to improve soil health by enhancing the soil's ability to sequester carbon, thereby reducing emissions.

🌲 Biochar Production from Woody Residue: Utilises woody residue for the production of biochar, serving as a long-term carbon storage solution.

Financial Support for Producers:

📣 Attention Producers: If you are interested in integrating these new climate-smart activities into your operations, you may be eligible for financial assistance! The IRA provides approximately $20 billion to support USDA’s various conservation programs:

1️⃣ Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)

2️⃣ Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP)

3️⃣ Regional Conservation Partnership Program (with also technical support)

👏 A big shout out to US Biochar Coalition (USBC)  for their continued efforts to bring biochar onto the agenda as the powerful climate solution and agricultural tool that it is! To find out more or join the movement here.
