The European Union (#EU) carried out a public consultation from March-June this year as part of the initiative to define climate targets for 2040. Analysis of 879 responses from individuals and organisations across Europe reveals key insights about perspectives on the state of climate targets.
What were the findings?
🙌 Three-quarters of respondents propose accelerating the EU’s #climate transition to 2040.
🎤 Citizen responses show the strongest support for an ambitious net target.
🎯 The majority of respondents advocate for three separate targets: greenhouse gas emission reductions, nature-based carbon removals, and industrial carbon dioxide removal (#CDR).
🚙 Transport was the sector with the highest agreement to stepping up emissions reductions.
📝 Respondents suggested prioritising those sectors with the highest absolute emissions for inclusion under #CBAM (read more about CBAM here: https://lnkd.in/dFGuGWy3)
🔑 Nearly half of respondents said that carbon removals are key for 2050 climate neutrality.
Overall, there seems to be the most support for a division between emissions reductions, nature-based solutions, and industrial removals. More work is still to be done to inform citizens, businesses and other institutions about the central role CDR will play in meeting ambitious climate targets.
Personally, I am glad to see the push for differentiation in target setting, something that will be key to create the right incentive structures at EU and especially national level.
What do you think? Do these findings resonate?
